Prince Henry the Navigator, born in 1394, was,
according to many accounts, the force behind Portugal's expanding
empire. Though it isn't easy to separate fact from legend (and it's
necessary to ignore some of the evil that was part of the time), we
know that his passion for exploration added to the world's knowledge
of cartography, navigation, and shipbuilding.
For us, we're content to explore his home turf, which is in some
ways a microcosm of Western Europe. We enjoyed
discovering the language, culture and cuisine of this
sometimes-overlooked corner of Europe.

Portugal has plenty of facilities for visiting boats, and it was easy for us to access Lisbon and the rest of the country on short trips.
